Two kinds of people, one truth
Something happened. A handful of witnesses each give a statement. Every witness is one of two kinds:
- Honest: everything they say is true.
- Liar: everything they say is false.
Your job is to classify every witness. There is always exactly one classification that makes every statement consistent, and you can reach it by reasoning alone. No luck, no hidden clues.
The move
Tap a witness card to cycle through Unknown, Honest and Lying. When every card is marked, press Submit the case. A wrong submission tells you how many cards are wrong, not which ones.
Reading statements
- "Morgan is lying." If the speaker is honest, Morgan really is lying. If the speaker lies, Morgan is honest.
- "Exactly three of us are honest." A count of the whole group, including the speaker.
- "Avery and Blake are the same type." Both honest or both liars.
- "Either Casey is honest or Drew is honest, but not both." One of the two, never neither, never both.
- "If Ada is honest, then I am lying." A conditional. It is only false when the first part is true and the second part false.
- "The witness seated after me is lying." Some cases seat the witnesses in a circle; seat 1 follows the last seat.
The classic trick: a liar cannot say "I am lying" and an honest witness cannot say it either, so nobody does. But a liar can happily say "I am honest".
How to actually solve one
- Find a statement that pins someone down on its own. Counting claims and claims about the speaker's own group are good starts.
- Assume a witness is honest. Follow every statement that touches them. If you hit a contradiction, they are lying, and now you know something for certain.
- Mark what you know, then look for the next card the remaining statements force.
- Use the notebook for longer chains, and the highlight on each statement to see who it talks about.
Hints
A hint is never a guess. The game checks every possible classification that still fits what you have marked and only tells you something the evidence genuinely proves. The first press points you at the statements to read; a second press shows the full deduction and offers to mark the card for you.
Modes and scoring
- Daily case: one shared case per UTC day, recorded once. The share text shows your time, hints and wrong submissions as a grid, never the answer.
- Endless: generated cases at four difficulties, each verified to have a single solution.
- Challenge: five cases in a row with three hints for the whole run. Score: 1000 per case plus a difficulty bonus, minus 100 per hint and 150 per wrong submission, minus a little for time beyond the first minute. Flawless runs earn an accuracy bonus; hint-free runs earn an efficiency bonus.
